Sciatica

Are you experiencing back pain or tingling? You might have developed sciatica. This common back condition is evaluated, diagnosed, and treated by a licensed chiropractor. Sciatica is one of the many back conditions treated by our staff at Ponte Vedra Wellness Center. Read below to find out more about sciatica, its causes, and its treatment.

.

What is Sciatica?

Sciatica is a pain or damage to the sciatic nerve. Also known as the ischiadic nerve, it is the largest and longest nerve of the body. Running along the lower back and legs, the sciatic nerve supplies sensation to the feet and lower legs. Damage to the sciatic nerve can result in numbness, tingling, and loss of sensation in these areas. Other symptoms can include lower back pain, hip pain, a burning sensation down the legs, and difficulty moving the leg or foot.

There is usually an underlying disease or injury that causes sciatica. Causes can include a spinal disc herniation, spinal stenosis, piriformis syndrome, or even pregnancy. Sciatica develops from the compression of the lumbar nerves.

Treatment for Sciatic Nerve Pain

Sciatica treatment begins with a diagnosis by a certified chiropractor. In order to receive a diagnosis, the patient will have to visit a chiropractor and ask for a physical examination. During the examination, the doctor may ask the patient about medical history. Tests are done in order to reach a diagnosis. Medical imaging is a popular tool used to evaluate the sciatic nerve.

Once a sciatica diagnosis is reached, the chiropractor will recommend a course of action for treatment. Pain management may come in the form of physical therapy such as stretching and exercise. Spinal manipulation performed by a general practitioner can be effective in treating sciatic nerve pain. If the sciatica is severe enough, the doctor may recommend surgery to fix the compression or irritation. Surgery is often done to address spinal stenosis or spondylolisthesis. Sometimes the doctor will prescribe medication for pain relief. As for alternative medicine, acupuncture has also been used to treat sciatica.
